Like quitou said, he's doing very cool things with the "triggerd electronic musical accompaniment but no tracks" thing. My only ref point is the MDF '00 DVD...altho I found his soloing & meter a bit over the top for speed & technique's sake for my tastes [a little frenetic, herky jerky, & frantic feeling, at times; very 'on top,' like some of you said b4 about that one Horacio perf on the same dvd], there's no denying he's a very good and accomplished player.
...Very proactive & positive force in drumming & music. And a good sense of humor every now & then AW...doesn't hurt.
If you can...I say, of course, GO.

Aside from his obvious drumming skills, he made a comment on that MDF 2000 DVD that was humorous...
Having assigned the accompanying triggered bass guitar notes to his kicks for a particular tune, he briefly explained the nature of it, then proceeded to say something similar to, "vvvvery good / my favorite bass player...always on time, always locked in...[&] never complains." [img]wink.gif[/img] [img]cool.gif[/img]
I might add, "has great tone, never calls in sick, & is never hung over..." [img]tongue.gif[/img] [j/k, all you great bassists!] ;cp

I would add one more ringing endorsement here. Akira Jimbo is simply amazing, especially if you're a big fan of the drummers generally mentioned in this message board. He's a great combination (loosely, of course!) of Gadd, Vinnie, Weckl, et al.(not to mention 'El Negro'!), but with his own style. Plus, the way he integrates electronics with the drums to create full-sounding music all by himself is really something to behold. If you want a preview, he has two new DVDs out, called "Wasabi" and "Fujiyama", as well as a host of VHS videos. He'll blow you away!

I am ashamed to have missed him here in a clinic last month, that I am sure only 20 people attended. I love his approach and he is great on the MD 2000 DVD. Oh yeah, and despite the harsh accent/"language barrier", he does have a keen sense of humor, as Fuse pointed out!
P.S. Anyone have or try his sig snare drum?? It's a 7x13 (great size!) beech shell with wood hoops. I am very curious!
